First drawing lesson

6/17

I almost forgot to mention this, but today was our first drawing lesson.

By drawing lesson I mean figure drawing. By figure drawing I mean attempting to sketch from a live nude model....

Our teacher Marsha- who is this older Jewish woman who studied abroad in Italy, met a guy and stayed forever- quickly took us through the steps of working out proportions and angles of the body when drawing people. We talked about how to use a pencil as a guide to eyeball distances and work out the shapes and sizes of body parts. Then we waited for the model to show up...

Lorenzo, came into the room wearing some sort of scarf/shawl around his waist and then posed in a number of different ways, sans shawl, so that we could practice quick sketching. He then held a longer pose and we did a full sketch.

I have to say it was a little awkward to suddenly have a naked person to capture/attempt to capture with little to no drawing skill. All of us in the class seemed to be suppressing the urge to giggle in the first few minutes. But we pulled it together and everyone was very respectful. It can't be easy standing around naked in front of a bunch of strangers who are intently staring and picking apart your body. Lorenzo seemed very nice, although when we bumped into him getting coffee during the break I couldn't quite look him in the eye.

Here are my sketches:

Quick Pose Sketches

Long pose sketch. Lorenzo of the giant feet! Now that I'm looking at the sketch again he looks like someone made up of a small torso attached to giant legs.  ;P

Ciao for now!

  1. Isn't it amazing what shoes hide from us? :)

  2. You know what they say about men w/ giant feet! They wear giant shoes. I hope Lorenzo was eye candy... even if not I'm just going to pretend he was. :)
